Much of the wood used in railroads has been
heavily treated with chemicals, such as creosote, which is known to seep into
the ground and contaminate the soil or water in the immediate area — which
would make the use of such wood in furniture a bad choice. However, I've also
heard that some railway trestles aren't treated with any wood preservative at
all. With the rise in popularity of reclaimed wood for modern home designs, how do you
confirm that this wood is safe?”
As part of the design project, 30
architects and designers each designed a piece of furniture using wood
reclaimed from used barriques, 230-liter wine barrels. Then, the San Patrignano
community’s members who work in the woodshop made the wood barrels into the
furniture pieces, allowing them to learn a trade that will help them to become
a part of society again. A total of six designs will be awarded prizes, three
designed by competitors under 26 years of age and three by competitors over 26
years of age. Award-winning designs will be produced by the woodwork workshop
at San Patrignano and their designers will have royalty rights. In addition to
these prizes, an SCM award will also be given. For more information, please

live in city apartments and condos tend to need smaller, more customized
pieces. In addition to the benches, he makes a variety of tables and other

Wood Recycling means reclaiming the wood in
furniture to be used once again as material for another furniture. Recycling or reclaiming wood might actually involve a more elaborate and
expensive process than just felling a 50-year old tree somewhere in Brazil and
making boards from them. I read
somewhere that recycling involved grinding the wooden furniture to sawdust
levels and gluing them with special adhesives to form what is called plywood
and particle boards. Recycling wood can be better explained as reclaimed
wood. That means wood from some
previously crafted thing being disembodied and made into another. I don’t mean re-use. Re-use connotes taking apart furniture and
using the same item, say a headboard, to be used as the headboard in another
furniture. Like those wooden ship
navigation wheels that get displayed in living rooms – from a functional existence
to a decorative item. There are plenty
of those around.
