Home decor does not have to be so serious.
One of the emerging themes for 2013 is fun. The home should be a playful space,
where you can be carefree and not buttoned-up all the time. Create a sense of
fun with color, from splashes of bright, citrus hues, to reconsidering a
certain regal color as a neutral. Hints of handcrafted materials, or Retro
styles help keep your decor light and fun in 2013 and beyond. When the economy
tanked in 2008, homeowners hit the pause button on home furniture purchases and home
renovations. They stood back, watched their savings and retirement accounts
take a roller-coaster ride, and generally stopped investing in home decor.
Nearly five years later, Julie Rogowski,
vice president and general manager of the Boston Design Center, says that
sentiment finally may be turning an important and well-decorated corner.
“The emphasis is changing from ‘Where can I save the most money’ to
‘What’s the perfect piece that totally reflects me.’ It’s a nice shift,”
Rogowski says. “It could be the economy, or it could be that people are ready
for change.”
2013 colors are sophisticated options that
invite you to embrace a neutral pallet For Your Home. Pantone predicts that neutrals will make a
major comeback during the next interior decorating design cycle.
The bright, shocking colors of the last couple seasons will give away to
a more soothing backdrop for this year’s trendy accessories, lighting and
furniture. Neutrals need not be boring,
or colorless. Focal points are not
always based on color. Folded and
sculptural shapes, intriguing textures, luminous finishes and an emphasis on
nature inspired motifs such as feathers create opportunities for focal
statements that transcend even reliance on color. “People are now looking at their homes and making them more of a
reflection of their day-to-day activities,” she says.
She says those shifting tastes are apparent
in a variety of trends, such as punchy patterns and 1940s Hollywood noir
styles. Here’s a sampling of what will be turning up in homes next year.
Even if it's not color in your wardrobe,
you may find it hard to resist a smile when you spot Kelly Green. The green is
happy, full of life, and has enough yellow in it to keep it bright. Painting an
entire room or even one whole wall may seem overwhelming. Incorporate this
color in your accessories. Some home decorating designs stick with a pop of red,
achieved with a red vase or one special tabletop accessory. You can do the same
with green.
